  • Even Broadway Joe thinks the New York Jets might finally have their next franchise quarterback.Joe Namath met Sam Darnold on the field at MetLife Stadium before the team's third preseason game and it provided quite the snapshot.Past meets future — and Youth LeGarrette Blount Jersey , maybe, the present."I've seen Sam perform tonight," Namath said during the TV broadcast, "better than I've seen any rookies I can remember."That's high praise from the only man to quarterback the Jets to a Super Bowl victory. And that came 50 seasons ago.The stunning win over the Colts will be celebrated by the team and its fans this year. It's also a brutal reminder of how long it has been since the Jets were on top of the football world.Darnold, they hope, can someday end that drought."That's the goal for everyone," Darnold said a few weeks after being drafted No. 3 overall. "Anything short of that is a failure and we're aware of that. Everyone is aware of that. Whatever my role is, I'm going to star in that role to work us toward that Super Bowl."The former USC star had a solid summer and impressed the coaching staff with his ability to quickly digest the playbook along with his veteran-like presence and approach.Darnold was given every chance to win the competition that included Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, and he didn't disappoint. Bridgewater was traded to New Orleans on Wednesday."He's able to take the classroom knowledge and all the stuff he's studied in the classroom and take it right to the field and execute it," offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates said. "We're throwing a lot of football at him and he's been able to handle it."Darnold could become the 31st quarterback to start a game for the Jets since Namath's last appearance for the franchise in 1976. That's a lot of searching and a long time waiting. There's big-time hope that Darnold is the answer, and that has the Jets and their fans optimistic about this season — and the future."He did everything we've asked him to do," coach Todd Bowles said. Here are some other things to know as the Jets enter the regular season:WHOSE LINE IS IT?While all eyes have been on the quarterbacks http://www.lionsauthorizedshops.com/authentic-christian-jones-jersey , the offensive line will be a major focus — no matter who's calling the plays in the huddle. The Jets signed center Spencer Long, who's an upgrade over Wesley Johnson, but the rest of the line is back. And, it remains to be seen if that's a good thing.Inconsistency and injuries made for a shaky season, and depth this year could be an issue. Left tackle Kelvin Beachum dealt with an ankle injury most of the summer, and right guard Brian Winters was in and out of the lineup with soreness."They've got to work together," Bowles said of the line. "They have to be healthy, obviously, but I feel good about them when they are healthy."SEARCH CONTINUESOne of the priorities for the Jets during the offseason was to find a pass-rushing presence, particularly at outside linebacker. No one emerged during training camp, and that could be something general manager Mike Maccagnan tries to address as the season goes along.Leonard Williams is perhaps New York's best overall player, but even he had only two sacks last season — although he racked up 28 quarterback hits. He needs help Devon Kennard Jersey , though, and that means the likes of Jordan Jenkins, Josh Martin and Henry Anderson must provide consistent pressure.CATCHING ONAn under-the-radar strength might be the Jets' receiving group, which might lack what some consider a true No. 1 talent but has good playmaking potential.Robby Anderson had a breakout year in his second season, catching 63 catches for 941 yards and seven TDs while establishing himself as a deep threat. Jermaine Kearse led the Jets with 65 receptions after coming to New York from Seattle. Quincy Enunwa looked solid late in camp as he returned from a neck injury that sidelined him all last season. Terrelle Pryor, still working his way back from two ankle surgeries in the past year, showed flashes this summer of the player who was so promising in Cleveland in 2016.SOLID SECONDARYThe Jets' biggest offseason free-agent addition was cornerback Trumaine Johnson , who signed a five-year, $72.5 million deal. They're hoping he and Morris Claiborne combine to form one of the NFL's top cornerback combinations.Add in the safety tandem of Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, both coming off solid rookie seasons, and New York's secondary could be a strength after struggling quite a bit the past few years."It's all (on) what we do with it," Claiborne said. "We have all the pieces. We just have to find a way to put it together and go get some wins."PLAYOFFS OR BUST?The Jets haven't been to the postseason since the 2010 season — back when Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez were all the buzz.Yeah Cheap Michael Roberts Jersey , it's been a while. But despite the drought, owner Christopher Johnson hasn't set a playoff mandate for Bowles and Maccagnan. Johnson wants to see continued progression. The feeling is that the franchise is building toward next season, when the team has more than $100 million in cap space and could really make a playoff push. Matt Patricia got an early taste of what Jimmy Garoppolo was capable of doing as an NFL quarterback. As soon as Garoppolo was drafted in the second round by New England in 2014, he got the chance to match wits with Patricia almost every day in practice as Tom Brady's backup, while Patricia served as defensive coordinator for the Patriots. The talents Garoppolo showed on the practice field only got better whenever he got a chance to play in a game, whether it was an exhibition, mop-up duty or in two starts during Brady's suspension in 2016.So when Garoppolo became a star after being dealt to San Francisco, Patricia wasn't surprised at all. He will get a firsthand look at it Sunday as coach of the Detroit Lions (0-1), who visit Garoppolo and San Francisco (0-1)."There was always something a little bit special about Jimmy in-game," Patricia said. "Just that extra light just came on and in the game itself you could just see really how special he was as a player."After winning his two starts with the Patriots, Garoppolo went 5-0 for San Francisco after a midseason trade last year and earned a $137.5 million, five-year contract. His first game with the new deal didn't go so well as he completed less than half his passes and threw three interceptions in a 24-16 loss at Minnesota. He expects a tough task this week http://www.lionscheapshop.com/cheap-authentic-sylvester-williams-jersey , knowing that Patricia likes to change up his schemes, although Garoppolo hopes all that time on the practice field against his defenses pays dividends."There's a couple of little things you remember from over the years and stuff," he said. "But, Matty P's a smart coach and I'm sure they'll have something game planned for us."Here are some other things to watch:REMATCHThe last time San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan had an offense take on Patricia's defense came in the Super Bowl in 2017. Shanahan's Atlanta Falcons took a 28-3 lead before falling apart late and losing 34-28 to the Patriots in OT. With little film of the Lions to go on after just one game with Patricia as coach, Shanahan has looked back at that game for some clues."When you have limited tape you have to go back to whoever the coordinator was, where he was the coordinator last, so you can understand all the scheme stuff," he said. "And that's what you see. It's very similar to what they've done in New England and they present a lot of challenges that are very tough to deal with."BOUNCE BACKPatricia's tenure in Detroit got off to a rocky start. The Lions' 48-17 loss to the Jets was their fourth-most lopsided opening game loss in franchise history and worst since falling 45-0 to Washington in 1991. The game got out of hand during New York's 31-point third quarter, the most points any team has scored in the third since the Rams had 41 against Detroit on Oct. 29, 1950."You can't let one week lead into another week," Patricia said. "You have to learn, and unfortunately Cheap Taylor Decker Jersey , on a very short week, we have to learn quickly."RED-ZONE WOESThe 49ers were held to one TD on four red zone trips in the opener, continuing a trend from last season with Garoppolo at QB when they scored TDs on 12 of 28 red zone trips. Some of the problems in the opener were self-inflicted, like when Alfred Morris lost a fumble at the 1 in the first half. And Garoppolo threw high to an open George Kittle later in the game. There was also a third-down pass to Pierre Garcon that was broken up in the end zone, leading to another field goal."It gets tougher down there, and when you have an opportunity and you miss it you will not have a good day in the red zone," Shanahan said. "Not going to reinvent the wheel, but we're going to try and get better at that stuff."GROUNDEDThe Lions had plenty of problems in the opener but one of the biggest might have been a lack of a running game. Detroit finished with a league-low 39 yards rushing on 15 carries. Offseason acquisition LeGarrette Blount lost 3 yards on four carries and rookie Kerryon Johnson had five carries for 17 yards.RELIABLE ROOKIESThe 49ers got strong production from their rookie class in the opener. First-round pick Mike McGlinchey had a solid performance starting at right tackle and then moving to guard after injuries to Mike Person and Joshua Garnett. Second-round pick Dante Pettis stepped in at receiver after Marquise Goodwin got hurt and caught two passes for 61 yards and the team's only TD. Third-round LB Fred Warner led all rookies with 11 solo tackles and added a forced fumble and pass defensed.AP Sports Writer Larry Lage contributed to this report
